Archwilio Mobile Application

The Archwilio app displays information from the four Historic Environment Records of Wales, that are managed and maintained by the four Welsh Archaeological Trusts.

In the same way that the Archwilio website is not the Historic Environment Records, the Archwilio app is not Archwilio. The Archwilio app gives mobile access to some of the information that is available on Archwilio, just as Archwilio gives access to some of the information available in the Welsh Historic Environment Records. Neither the Archwilio app, nor the Archwilio website are suitable for Development Control (Planning) purposes.

The Archwilio app works on mobile devices running Android version 2.3 and later. It has been developed by CEMAS (Centre of Excellence in Mobile Applications and Services) at South Wales University. CEMAS and the Archwilio app are funded by the European Welsh Regional Development Fund.

In order for the Archwilio app to function efficiently a data download limit returns a maximum of 500 records at one time.

When the Welsh Archaeological Trusts update information about an archaeological site it takes 48 hours for this to appear on the Archwilio app. To save the user potential download costs when disconnected from Wi-Fi, and to improve download speeds the Archwilio app will check for updated information and only download it again if something has changed since the last time it was viewed on the device. Otherwise the cached information is displayed.

Many sites are protected by law. The inclusion of a site in Archwilio does not mean that it is publicly accessible. You must always have the landowner's permission to visit a site. For more information click here.
