Burnt Mound, Porth Neigwl

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 29933
Trust : Gwynedd
Community : Llanengan
NGR : SH29002570
Site Type (preferred type first) : Bronze Age BURNT MOUND
Legal Protection :

Description :
The site lies on a small sandy promontory being actively eroded by the sea at highest tides and is under immediate threat of complete destruction. The site appears to be a domestic occupation site and is of great archaeological potential and is unique in this area.

The burnt stone horizon was shown to be a burnt mound (Fig. 5). Associated with it were two pit features, one of which appeared to be a classic burnt mound 'trough'. When cleaned back this pit was found to contain a preserved timber lining of split logs of which two ends, set approx. at right angles, were uncovered. This seems to be the corner of a rectangular timber trough of unknown size that lies further back in the cliff face (Figs. 7 & 8) (PRN 29934). <1>

This area was investigated in March 2008 by George Smith of GAT by cleaning and recording the cliff exposure, and found to be a Bronze Age burnt mound with a well-preserved timber-lined trough. (Berks, Davidson & Evans, 2010)

Large burnt mound buried under sand and lying on a buried soil. Two sequential troughs found during excavation. (Kenney, 2011)
