PORT WALL

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 01186g
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Chepstow
NGR : ST5325993947
Site Type (preferred type first) : Medieval Town defences
Legal Protection : scheduled ancient monument , listed building I

Summary :
The wall, c.1200, was not part of the main town wall but a thin screen wall extending to the S and W limits of the town. Excavation has shown that it was built without a trenched foundation and had a slight bank behind it.

Description :
Occupation levels prior to the wall construction were again found and dated to c1200. These were followed up by wall constructional levels and a further build up of ground on the outside of the wall. Only minimal signs of foundation trenches for the wall and bastion, no sign of ditch in the area excavated.
