BLACKCLIFF LIMEKILNPrimary Reference Number (PRN) : 07070g
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Tintern
NGR : ST5329698172
Site Type (preferred type first) : Post-Medieval Lime kiln
Legal Protection : scheduled ancient monument
Limekiln fronting cliff-side quarry in mixed broadleaf. Intact kiln c.12m N/S with 2 drawholes & central pot c.3m diam. lined with firebrick. Overgrown track leads in from S.
A substantial example of a limekiln related to the standard Wye Valley type, together with its associated charging ramps and quarry setting (PRN 7071g). The kiln has two drawing arches facing the front a serving a single bowl, like other 19th century kilns in the Valley. This is an exceptionally large example, roughly 12m across. The pot is intact and exposed to half its depth, roughly 3m across, and lined with firebrick. A large stone buttress has been built between the front arches, probably soon after the kiln's original construction. Charging ramp curves up round the north of the kiln and a track exits towards the Chepstow-Tintern road at the south-west. There are substantial quarry faces to the west. Designated of nation importance as one of the most substantial examples of the Wye Valley type of limekiln, in a good setting of earthworks and quarry faces.
