Searches can be text-based, map-based or a combination of both.
It is not necessary to enter a term into the main search box; a search
can be completed using only the Searching Options if desired. Use
combinations of keywords, search option selections and map areas for a
more refined search.
Basic searches Enter one or more keywords, Primary Reference Number or Postcode into
the search box.
To search for an exact match enter keywords in quotation marks e.g.
Choose an option from the Period or Community lists.
Refined searches Use "", + or - to refine your search as explained below:
Simple Keyword search forge matches forgeorforges or any word containing
forgesmithyfoundry matches records containing forgeorsmithyorfoundry
forgesmithy +roman matches records which may contain forgeorsmithy
but must contain Roman
forgesmithy -roman matches records with forgeorsmithyand notRoman
matches records with forgeor the expression "Romanroad"
+barrow "+beacon ring" matches records which must contain barrow and "beacon ring",
the + inside the quotes applies to the whole quoted phrase
Using the terms forgesmithy with filters period : Medieval
and community : Caersws will match all records with forgeorsmithy which are in the Medieval period and located in Caersws.
Selecting the Any option for a filter turns the filter off.
Text matching is not case sensitive.
Keyword and Postcode searches can be combined with options from the
Period and/or Community lists for further refinement.
Searching within the map view
To search only within a chosen map view, no other search methods are required.
Zoom in to choose the map area and tick ‘Search only within the map view’
to search for all records within that view.
Combine keyword and/or other selected searching options with a chosen
Zooming and Panning Use the zoom in/out icons on the left hand side of the map to zoom
in at a pre-determined rate.
For finer control over the area you wish to zoom to hold down the CTRL
key and use the mouse to drag a box over the area of your choice.
Pan the map using the arrows in the top left hand corner of the map
or click and hold the left mouse button and drag the map to desired area.
The inset map of Wales displays a red outline for the current map view
area. You can use the mouse to drag this box to change the map view.
Viewing Search Results When a record is selected in the table of results, the map automatically
pans to the location of that record.
If a record ‘spot’ is selected on the map using the left mouse button
the record result is highlighted in the table below.
Hover the mouse over a record ‘spot’ for basic information about that
If the map has been zoomed or panned following a search the
icon can be used to return the map back to the extents of the search results.
Double clicking with the left mouse button on a map ‘spot’ zooms the
map into the selected feature.
To show Glastir regions enter a single CRN number into the search box.
Glastir regions will be plotted along with the usual symbol for HER records.
The regions can be quite small so you may need to zoom in to see them.
